Here at Generate UK, we are a family. So, we wanted to start introducing our family members to you.
This is a new series where you will get to find out more about who we are as well as a few fun facts.
We have already introduced you to Andrea Tallett, one of our amazing designers. Next up we want to introduce you to our Lead Developer, Patrick Hathway.
Tell us a bit about what you do here at Generate UK
I am the Lead Developer, so essentially, I build and maintain many of the sites we work on.
I tend to be involved in many of the larger and more technical projects. In addition to that I do what I can to support the team and look into what we can do to improve our development processes.
What made you want to be a developer?
That’s an interesting question and it goes back years ago. When I was still in school, I had an IT teacher, and I overheard him having a conversation with someone else.
He said the IT industry is a really dynamic industry and it is really heading in an interesting direction with lots of exciting technology coming up.
He said web development in particular is an interesting industry where there is always something new and exciting happening and it can be really fun. So that lodged in the back of my mind somewhere, and when it came to finishing my degree and looking for jobs, I thought why not?
What do you enjoy about your role here?
I think it is the fact that no day is ever the same, every day is different. Also being able to play around with interesting and exciting new technology.
What is the best thing about working for Generate UK?
It is a really friendly company; they have always been really supportive. They are interested in what I have to say and my ideas. But, essentially for me the main thing is the friendliness, right from the top (MD) down.
What is your favourite tool to use?
My favourite tool is PHP Storm, which is an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) It allows me to do most of my programming within it and has lots of really useful features such as auto complete or provide suggestions to improve certain programming aspects.
OK, let’s go for a few fun questions…What do you like to do in your spare time?
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Caving as one of my hobbies, as it is quite unusual. I get to explore places hardly anyone else has. It’s also the physical challenge, which is exciting.
I went on an expedition to Austria where they were trying to find a way to connect two caves, one at the top of a mountain and one at the base. They had been trying to do this for about 50 years and I was on the trip where they discovered the connection and it’s now the 9th deepest cave in the world!
It’s got to be ice cream. I really like the authentic stuff like Italian gelato, particularly the fruity ones, banana, strawberry, vanilla.
Soft drink would have to be Coke with lots of ice and lemon on a really hot day. Favourite alcoholic drink would have to be a traditional Somerset cider, especially as I am from there.
It would have to be JRR Tolkien. I also really enjoy reading Philip Pullman.
The superhero films are always fun like Spiderman, I also enjoy Star Wars. But, Lord of the Rings trilogy of films has to be one of my all-time favourites.
One last question, if you had a superhero power, what would it be and why?
It would be really nice to be able to fly, and just look down and see the expanse of ground. To be able to fly around and go anywhere easily would be great!
